About Soft Tissue Therapy
Soft tissue therapy uses hands on techniques to manage, manipulate and rehabilitate the soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is applicable not just to sports people but to anybody wishing to guard against or recover from a soft tissue injury.
Soft tissue therapy is effective for a wide range of minor and chronic injuries, aches and pains. It is an excellent treatment for anybody wishing to improve their overall physical well being.
Benefits include better sleep, increased blood flow, reduced nerve excitability and decreased muscle tension and muscle spasms.
The Therapist treats the immediate problem but also looks for the root cause of the injury such as poor posture, past injury or occupational stress factors.
Many different movements and techniques are used in Soft Tissue therapy. Examples of these techniques include; Sports Massage Swedish style massage, effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), compression, friction, tapotement (rhythmic striking), vibration and gliding. Your Therapist may use silicone cups or massage "blades" or release tension using acupressure trigger points. They may show you stretches and conditioning exercises to improve your posture, range of movement and flexibility.
For athletes Soft Tissue Therapy can be used to prepare mind and body pre-performance, relax and recover post-performance and decrease recovery time and the chance of injury during training periods.
